Skull A Day

I know, I know. Skulls are so passe. But this skull news, though not actually new, is too good to pass up.

Artist, blogger and author Noah Scalin began making a skull a day for a year in 2007, and thus the project Skull-A-Day was born. Skulls from that year are featured in his book, SKULLS, published by Lark Books in 2008 and available through IndieBound and other fine booksellers. Also, one of Scalin's skull drawings (above) is featured on a Kenneth Cole t-shirt.

In the years to come, Scalin began publishing skulls by other artists on his Skull-A-Day blog. My favorites include this illustration by Robert Steven Connett ,

and this sculpted sand skull.

























In addition to the art skulls, several skull items are available from site sponsors. These include skull cookies from Whimzskulls:

Check out the SKULL-A-DAY website yourself, and I'm sure you'll find your own favorites. Let's face it: they're skulls. They're not going to go away.

Ten Free Valentine Fonts

Here are some lovely Valentine's fonts I've rounded up for your downloading pleasure, and just in time to use them in writing your Valentine love letters.

As far as I know, these are all freeware or trialware or linkware fonts that can be downloaded free of cost. Make sure you read the terms of use, usually included with the download as a "readme" file, before using them yourself. The designers typically don't want them used to make money, and would often like a link back.

I've done my best to give credit where it's due, and each has a link to where it can be downloaded.

Misprinted Type

Ok, now you guys are going to laugh at me, but don't. This wouldn't be a big deal for a lot of people, but remember, I'm not a designer. I'm just someone who picked up a little Photoshop between phone calls. (Some people would use the word dilettante, but some people are just plain mean.) This is a big deal for me.

I saw this Florida ad in a magazine today, and I recognized the typeface. Or font. I don't even know the difference. But I recognized it. It's called "Porcelain," and it's by Eduardo Recife, and I know that because I posted about his firm, misprinted type, on NOTCOT(.org) a couple of months ago.


















Ok, it's distinctive. Not a hard font to recognize. Someone like Ben Terrett (see below) would have recognized it in his sleep.

But I'm no Ben Terrett. I'm not a graphic designer--I've never even taken a class. I'm a psychologist.

And I'm feeling pretty good right now.

After posting about free Halloween fonts and then about skulls, how could I not point you toward this free skulls dingbat I found over at ScrapVillage? (I know Halloween is over, but don't forget about Day of the Dead, which falls on November 1st and 2nd. Besides, who needs a special occasion to use a skull?)

Also, I forgot to add to my skulls tirade this amazing example, which will also heal your wounds (if not your inner child):

I found it first at Urban Outfitters, but why pay $6.00 plus $5.95 shipping when you can get it at perpetual kid for $3.99--and shipping is free if you buy $99.00 worth of stuff (which is easy to do there)?

My, that was a long sentence. By the way, I have no affiliation with either store. I'm just sayin'.

I should warn you: I still may not be done with skulls. In fact, I may perseverate on skulls for quite some time. We'll have to wait and see.

Ten Free Halloween Fonts

Don't you just love fonts? I don't need a special occasion to go font-shopping, but recently some Halloween fonts have caught my eye, and some of them are pretty cool. I thought I'd share the best of them with you.

As far as I know, these are all freeware or trialware or linkware fonts that can be downloaded free of cost. Make sure you read the terms of use, usually included with the download as a "readme" file, before using them yourself. The designers typically don't want them used to make money, and would often like a link back.

I've done my best to give credit where it's due, and each has a link to where it can be downloaded.

Here they are:








1. Calaveras was created by Harold Lohner, and can be downloaded from the Harold's Fonts site. While you're there, be sure to take a look at his other art.










2. Dancing Dead was created by Mike Larson of Mr. Fisk Fonts. If that link doesn't work, it can also be downloaded from Urbanfonts.









3. DemBones can be downloaded here. It does not come with a "readme" file, and I have not seen it credited to anyone, though I've looked. If anyone knows who created this font, please let me know via "comments."









4. SF Gushing Meadow was designed by ShyFonts Type Foundry. Their "readme" file contains a link, but it's to an advertising site and you can't find the font there. I downloaded it from here.










5. Halloween Kiddy Font was designed by Lime of House of Lime. He or she has designed loads of fonts--be sure to check them out! Lime accepts donations via PayPal.











6. Halloween Match is offered by Fontmenu as an evaluation version of the font, which costs only $3.95. Fontmenu also has a great range of fonts, many available for free as an evaluation or "trial" version. The full versions of the fonts have a wide range of prices, all of which are, in my opinion, quite reasonable.











7. Halloween Spider was designed by Claude, aka Chloe, and is available for free on her site, which is mostly in French. (I love using Babel Fish to translate; the translations are hysterical.)










8. Spider was designed by Renny Murray and is available on her site, Rennys Niche. I love this font! She has designed a bunch of fun, free fonts to download.








9. Groovy Ghosties was designed by Ray Larabie and is available for download at My Fonts. Donations are accepted via PayPal at Larabie Fonts. (Larabie Fonts distributes its free fonts through My Fonts.)











10. Ghost is another font from Renny Murray at Rennys Niche.
